Raven will do just about anything to forget a horrific event from the past that still haunts her. Forced to attend church because of a promise she made at a party, she is immediately attracted to the young, handsome preacher but is unconvinced of his promises of a better life.
A future he refuses to accept…
Matthew has everything planned out until Raven walks into his church and turns his life upside down. Repulsed by her lifestyle, yet fascinated by her beauty and charm, he finds himself drawn to her by a force he can’t explain.
Raven and Mathew’s unlikely friendship leads them through escalating troubled waters that threaten to doom their growing relationship. Will they survive to learn valuable lessons of grace, forgiveness and love?
Raven turned to Matthew. “Listen, I’m not asking you to date me. I just want to know why you never even gave us a chance. Was it really because you thought I wasn’t a strong enough Christian?”
“Partly.” He looked down. “It was also because I don’t know if I’m a strong enough Christian.”
“You really think I would let anything happen?”
He stood up and threw his arms in the air. “Don’t you see? That’s the problem. I’m the preacher. I’m supposed to be a man of God. If I don’t think I can control myself on a date, then I can’t take you out.” He shook his head and looked at her. “Don’t you get it? I don’t know if what I feel for you is love or lust.” He ran his hand through his hair. “Man, I can’t believe I’m telling you this.” He shook his head. “I can’t take the chance of pulling you down. I won’t allow it.”
“Do you think God may have put these desires in you for a reason?”
“It doesn’t matter. You and me, it would never work.” He sat back down on the small red couch.
“Oh, yeah. I forgot. Because of my Christianity or lack of it.”
Matthew’s eyes widened.
Raven quickly held her hand up in defense. “I understand, really. I’m not trying to be sarcastic, but it’s because of my weaknesses, my sins. You’re a preacher, you can’t have a girlfriend that sins.”
She shook her head. “Wait. I didn’t mean it that way.” She walked over to the couch and sat next to him, tucking her legs up under her. She looped her arm through his and rested her head on his shoulder. “I just want to get past this.”
“I want to, too.” He grabbed her hand. He knew he should push her away, but instead he entwined his fingers with hers and held on tight. He lowered his head in defeat. “This is my problem, not yours.”
Raven leaned into him. “I don’t think it’s a problem.” When he was about to protest, she tightened her grip. “Let me finish.”
“I understand that we may not be right for each other. I mean, we’re total opposites, but doesn’t this feel right?”
He knew if he denied it, he’d be lying. How could he fight this? He never wanted the moment to end.
